Finding Your Ancestors in Abricots, Haiti

Finding Your Ancestors in Abricots, Haiti

I selected the featured image of a beautiful flower because this flowers actually grows in Haiti. I always advise people that you should never believe what is put before you but always look beyond. What the media or the government may say about a country or place may not be the full true picture of a people or place. Nothing resonates louder than the beauty of Haiti. Look beyond what is put before you and you will always discover truth and beauty. While there is poverty in every country, you will find beautiful people and land.

There are plenty of digitized records for the researcher that is looking for ancestors in Haiti. Unfortunately, until the custodians of the records agree to release more digitized images, they will remain unavailable to be viewed online. This is the struggle that many researchers face when researching in the Caribbean. However, there are plenty to look through and this post will cover Abricots or Abriko, as known in Haitian Creole.

Abricots is a municipality located on the southwestern coast of Haiti. Records are limited but just finding that potential ancestor is worth the look. The available digitized images are Civil Registration records that cover the years from 1827 to 1913. The section headers are written in English, French, and then Haitian Creole in recognition of the region. Note that all records are written in French. If you find that you cannot read the information, simply use Google Translate or become a member of the Facebook group named Haitian Genealogy,Genealogie d’Haiti, et Saint- Domingue and post a copy of the image along with the URL to where the image is located and request assistance and one of the many members there will be happy to assist. I hope that these records assist many in their research. Bon chans!
